[ka-Map-users] odd behavior

So far since installing Ka-map for the first time, I've had no luck getting it working right.    When it starts up, I just see flashing "dead image" icons where it appears that tiles should be drawn.   

I've got GD installed into PHP now, i'm reasonably sure I've got config.php set properly, and i'm trying to use it on the gmap-40ms demo map.   

I found that if I try scrolling the map up and to the right I find a small part of the map actually drawing... but it appears to be just one layer and only a few tiles of it.    Some of the tiles around it render as plain white squares, while others continue flashing the "dead image" icon.   

I took some screenshots that maybe can show what i'm talkinga bout better than my description.

The first 3 screenshots are with debug turned on in the config file, in firefox.    The first image is when I first start the application and scroll so that the rendered tiles are in the screen.   The next one shows what it looks like as a few more tiles appear, and then I scrolled away and let more tiles render  and as you can see none of them have any mapping in them.. they are just white. 

The final screenshot is with debugging turned off again in IE... I've scrolled so that the few tiles are in view but you can see around it are white tiles or dead image tiles.


If anybody has any clues as to what is happening here, please let me know.
