Yes, i did delete the cache between attempts.   I forgot about it at first 
and was wondering why I couldn't get out of debug mode :)

I removed all of the scales except the most zoomed in scale and it worked 
much much better, but as I panned around I did eventually find some areas of 
the map where I was getting the dead image icon flashing instead of a tile.

I tried it with my own application data and it actually seems to be working 
well at all zoom levels!   I'm not sure what the problem is with the gmap 
demo data for me.

Also I did try bumping up the resource limits in the php.ini from 8MB max to 
32MB max and it didn't make any difference.

Thanks for all the pointers, it's great to see it working with my data! 
Now to see if I can make the rest of my application work with it... that 
will be a challenge, but at least I can get this working on a basic level.
