You can add GROUPs to your layers.  Layers with the same GROUP name  
will be combined into a single tile draw.  Layers without a GROUP are  
automatically placed in a special GROUP called Base.  Each GROUP is  
drawn as a separate set of tiles with a separate cache.

Is that what you are looking for?
