For what it's worth, on my Debian system the mapscript location is
/usr/lib/php4/20050606

I personally was stuck quite a while here.  New builds of mapserver (such
as with ECW and SID support) never seemed to function properly.  Finally I
realized that I had failed to install the new php_mapscript.so to the
above folder, so mapserver was never seeing the ECW/SID support and would
fail to draw these images.
