Scott, I believe there is a setting in php.ini that controls allowing 
this style of tag called short_open_tags that is normally set to true, 
but you may have set to false?  If this is the case then I can add a 
check for that to the info page to warn people about this setting.  If 
not, can you send a copy of one of the pages with parse errors to the 
list so we can try troubleshooting it.

Also, can you provide details on your platform and versions.
