[maplab-users] gis-knoppix configuration issue

either from the live cd of gis-knoppix or from its installation on my hard 
drive, i am unable to create a new map or open an existing map or connect to 
a data store.

TRYING to open an existing map in map browser (as read only) gives the 
following error on the map frame area:

Fatal error: This build of mapscript can't be load as a 'cgi-fcgi' module 
for stability reason, but only with php as an apache DSO. in 
/var/www/maplab/htdocs/common/wrapper/map_session.php on line 208

AND it also gives an apache log error:

File does not exist: /var/www/maplab/htdocs/mapbrowser/a_pixel.gif

Which does actually exist in the images subdirectory of the above path.

TRYING to create a new map in mapedit gives the following error:

Can't create file name (/var/www/maplab////newname.map)

NOTE the excessive slashes.

TRYING to open the tutorial.map in mapedit gives an error in the corner of 
the browser:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable 
to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster at Knoppix and inform them 
of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may 
have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Apache/1.3.33 Server at localhost Port 80

AND in the apache error log it says:

Premature end of script headers: /usr/lib/cgi-bin/php4

IN some situations there seems to be some confusion about whether i am 
htdocs or htdocs/htdocs

the linux-INSTALLATION.txt file assumes i know how to interpret all the data 
and configuration stuff for apache, php and mapscript, but i don't seem to 
have enough information. reading some general documentation and fiddling 
around in some config files has not led to me being able to try the 
tutorial.

can anyone please point me to some more useful information about configuring 
maplab on gis-knoppix? i thought it would run out of the box so at least you 
get an idea of whether it is working. then to dive in and learn in more 
depth. the test.php example and the xml config files and some of the phtml 
and php sources are not clearly leading me to the resolution of this issue.

AND is there a website where i can visit a working mapedit and gmapfactory?
