[Mapserver-ottawa] unable to buil python mapscript

I have install the mapserver on my linux machine but I can't build my python mapscript.
 
I run into this error which forced me to stop..
 
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lmap
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
error: command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1
 
but I don't know what this mean.. please help me ...


ps.. I also could not build gdal into my system. The error I received is...

/bin/sh: /usr/local/DOWNLOADS/mapserver: no such file or directory
make[1]: *** [cpl_conv.o] Error 127
make[1]: Leaving directory 'usr/local/DOWNLOADS/mapserver things/gdal/port'
make: *** [port-target] Error 2

so.. thats my situation.. help...
