Hi Alfred,

I am running mapserver 3.6.5  on FreeBSD 4.7 successfully. I used the
following options.

./configure --with-gd --with-gdal --with-ogr --with-proj=/usr/local --with-j
peg=/us
r/local --with-pdf=/usr/local --with-png=/usr/local --with-zlib --with-freet
ype --w
ith-php=/usr/ports/www/mod_php4/work/php-4.3.1 --with-wmsclient --with-postg
is --en
able-runpat


You have to specify the path for the following options

--with-proj=/usr/local
--with-jpeg=/usr/local
--with-pdf=/usr/local
--with-png=/usr/local
--with-php=/usr/ports/www/mod_php4/work/php-4.3.1


You don't need to specify the following:
--with-gd
--with-gdal
--with-ogr
--with-zlib
--with-freetype
--with-postgis


Don't forget:
--enable-runpat


That should work.

Don't forget the changes in the mapscript Makefile, if you need mapscript!
