Hi, Ken.

Your wildlife project has close parallels with our
ReLeaf project, which we did as a demo to the City of
Eureka. In this case, the points are trees that high
school students are cataloguing.

Here's a demo of ours:
http://maps.hostgis.com/php-bin/mwc.php?template=template2&map=/maps/releaf/releaf.map

Ours is a tad different: clicking on the map is the
cue to add/view a point. A user clicks the map to see
details or, if there was nothing where they clicked,
they are prompted to add a point. This was done with
simple query templates that redirect to a PHP program.

The new points are stored with a field 'hidden' set to
1, and when an admin edits the record (again, clicking
the map) the field is changed to 0. Thus, new trees
may be posted by anyone but will only become publicly
visible when they have been reviewed.

In addition, an admin can post pictures and files to
be associated with each point: photos, scanned title
deeds, ecology documents, whatever.

If you'd like to compare notes and source code, let me
know. Our methodology turned out to be very simple,
thanks to PHP/MapScript and ADOdb.
