You're right, the layer definition needed adjustment to correct the error:

CONNECTION "mySDEserver,esri_sde,sde,user,password"

where esri_sde is the name of the service from
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\services
This is basically mentioned in the mapserver SDE documentation, though
an example
might make it much more obvious. I forgot to mention that this was SDE
9.1 on ORACLE.
