[ms4w-users] php mapscript to set a filter

Hi i have a question about setting a filter in a php script, i am able 
to set the filter to display a single state but how can i display multiple
states at the same time.
   
  $layername = $map->getLayerByName("states");
  $layername->set("filteritem","state");
$layername->setFilter("SD");
   
  This is how iam able to set the filter for a single state, but if i want to display multiple states then what should i do.
   
  Any suggestions are highly appreciated .....
