Hello,

Yes, the PHP problem with MapLab is unfortunate.

Regarding running multiple MS4W versions, yes, the easiest way is to 
install it on another partition, and modify its Apache to use a 
different port number (in MS4W 2.2.3, see line 53 of 
/ms4w/Apache/conf/httpd.conf).
