Brian, 

The proj command translates between projection coordinates (in a defined
projection), and geodetic coordinates in the same datum/ellipsoid.  So 
what are you wanting to translate to/from WGS84/Geodetic?  

If you need to do datum shifting there is experimental support for that
in the new cs2cs program.  Let me know if that's what you need.
