Umm.... didn't mention you were using GPC
some simplistic but effective areas for the globe
might be just the upper and lower quadrants 
( 8 areas total)

More sophisticated areas can be based on a
recursive platonic solid, but any structure 
topologically equivalant to a sphere will do

No reasons the boundaries will show unless
you draw them as the polygonal pieces should
just abut if the math is done correctly
