[Proj] About UTM projection: sphere, ellipsoid or both?

Hello,
If I execute proj -l=tmerc I can see the general information about the
transverse Mercator projection:
tmerc : Transverse Mercator
Cyl, Sph&Ell
An for the UTM information proj -l=utm
utm : Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM)
Cyl, Sph
zone= south
As you can see, apparently the transverse Mercator is defined for the
sphere and the ellipsoid, but the UTM only for the sphere. But UTM
should be only a particular case of transverse mercator/Gauß-Krüger
projection.
Is this a bug in documentation or actually the UTM in proj is defined
only for the sphere?
Thanks
