Kevin,

I'm afraid a special (paid) license is needed in order to
get MrSID encoding support, so FWTools's GDAL does not
include the ability to write to MrSID format.  Generally folks
prepare TIFF files and use the Lizardtech provided tools
to turn these into MrSIDs.   But I don't know how the pricing
works for these. 

There is GDAL support for writing to MrSID if you have the
write API, but my understanding is that Lizardtech is quite
careful about how they license the API level encoder so it
likely wouldn't be practical to try and do that.
