[FWTools] python conflict when using gdal_merge.py Windows XP

I was running it from within the FWTools shell.  I had been using version
0.99.  I uninstalled it and installed the latest version 100a5 and it ran
with no errors.  Perhaps there was some problem with my first install.

Kurt,

Are you sure you are using gdal_merge from within the FWTools
Shell?  FWTools should be able to co-exist with other installations
of python, but you can only insure that FWTools stuff will work
properly if you do it from within the right environment.  The
FWTools shell sets up the environment (by calling setfw.bat in
the FWTools directory), but if you just do stuff from a normal
command shell you have no assurance things will work properly.
