The default value of 10 pixels has always worked fine for us. I don't 
see any reason to increase it beyond that. The reason why the buffer is 
used is to prevent some bad looking line ends on the edge of the maps 
(for thick lines), as long as the buffer value is as big as the thickes 
line in your map then you're fine.
