I think that your problem is that your projection definition is not the same that the projection used in your shape file. I has the same probleme. To find the rights coordonates, I define a very large to be sure to find my data on the map. So I zoomed to take the coordonate according to the system of projection pre-defined in the map file. A professionnal have to change the projection definition, but, it is too hard for me :) Or too long...
