Hi Josh,
I'm new to Mapserver/MapLab, but have recently installed all of the
software (successfully) on my Linux server (Debian). I installed via
source code, so it took awhile - two sessions spread over two days in
fact, but that included EVERYTHING from GD, PHP, GDAL, PostgreSQL/PostGIS ...
One could install FWTools ( http://fwtools.maptools.org ) if one wanted
on their Linux box (it failed to install on my server). It's oriented to
the Python scripting language (not PHP), though, and may not run MapLab.
I looked at 'htmlx.com' and their hosting plan offers Mapserver and PHP-
Mapscript, so your most of the way there. Beyond that, you need to have
PHP and Mapserver compiled with extra options for using MapLab, which is
more than is necessary to just get Mapserver or Mapserver/PHP Mapscript
running:
http://www.maptools.org/maplab/index.phtml?page=maplab_linux.txt
Also, it looks as if 'htmlx.com' does not have very recent installs of
Mapserver, etc.
You may be best off getting a managed/dedicated Linux server, with root
access and install everything from source (as I did). I'm very happy I
chose that route, and I can re-compile any new versions that come along,
or add extra software when needed.
If you have root access, you can also install source (or binaries) on
Linux through the 'apt-get' program to ease your compiling pains.
My managed server is from http://www.dreamhost.com and I've had an
excellent experience with them (unlimited domains, email, databases
users, etc). You have to ask for root access, though, unless you install
everything into your own user directories (which I find a hassle).
