[FWTools] using FWTools; need to recompile mapserv

It is turning out to be difficult to recompile mapserv in a way that
produces a replacement for the binary included with FWTools.
I'm thinking it may be necessary to ditch FWTools and build mapserv +
extras from scratch, unless there exists documentation on how mapserv is
built into FWTools. Does anybody know of such documentation?
